My name is Aloysia and I've been teaching yoga in Southampton since 2017.
I started my yoga journey during a particularly stressful time in my life. I felt a very strong pull towards it as I just needed something to help me relax. I felt the benefits almost immediately, as I always left the class feeling really blissed out, but within a few weeks I noticed that I was feeling less stressed at home and at work too. I was sleeping better and I found that I was much calmer in situations that would have really bothered me before.
Yoga was having a magical effect on my nervous system, so I was able to regulate my emotions and navigate life's challenges much more effectively. Over time I learned to be a bit kinder to myself and accept my imperfections rather than beating myself up constantly.
I had a wonderful teacher, he was incredibly devoted to the traditions of yoga, which he had spent years learning about in India. He taught us not just about the physical aspects of yoga, but the ancient wisdom and philosophy that underpinned it, which gave me a whole new perspective on life . He encouraged us to practice yoga every day and make it part of our routine, clearing our minds just as we would clean our teeth.
I felt inspired to start sharing what I had learned, in the hopes that others might benefit from yoga as much as I had, so in 2017 I took the plunge and did my yoga teacher training.
I was particularly interested in making sure that yoga is inclusive and accessible to everybody, so I focused much of my learning on how to remove the barriers for those who may not otherwise attend classes, due to physical or mental health challenges.
I believe that everyone can benefit from yoga, no matter your lifestyle or background. You don't need to be fit or flexible to participate, all you need is an open heart and a willingness to learn.
Beyond the physical aspects, yoga is a holistic practice that enables us to tap into the innate wisdom that we all possess, and helps us to reveal the peaceful version of ourselves that exists within us all.
The beauty of yoga is that it brings people together from all walks of life. At the heart of the yogic tradition is the concept of 'Sangha' (which means community in Sanskrit), where we all connect through our shared practice. Thanks to yoga, I've had the honour of connectiong with so many wonderful souls.
In addition to teaching weekly classes in and around Southampton, I've taught children and adults with special needs, I've worked with large companies and mental health charities. I've taught at music festivals and community events, special schools and children's homes.
What started as a need to alleviate stress has turned into the most incredible and life-changing journey. It's helped me to learn a lot about myself, develop resilience in the face of difficulties and grow as a person.
I truly hope that yoga will change your life for the better too and I can't wait to share it with you!
